About a year ago I was driving around town, then-girlfriend next to me, and the subject of my beloved black leather trenchcoat came up. Most people assume it's Matrix-inspired, but I'm sure everyone here can guess it's actually nothing to do with that. I'd not particularly thought about BTVS in years, but it was during that conversation that I was hit by the realisation that Spike is not only the reason I'm never seen without that coat, but also the reason I have blonde hair.

Always been a Buffy fan, ever since it was shown on BBC2 at tea time. First episode I ever saw was 'The Pack,' at a friend's house. Didn't get 'round to watching it at home until series 2, I think it was 'Inca Mummy Girl.' Been watching it ever since.

These days, favourite episodes are Once More With Feeling, Seeing Red, Innocence, Lover's Walk, most of the second half of Season 3. As for Angel, Smile Time says it all.

Over the summer of 2007 Monotone and I watched the whole lot on DVD, it left me wanting more, particularly Spuffy, so I started reading the fanfic. Quickly realised that Buffy isn't actually that likeable, I now much prefer Spara and Spawn. Obviously these categories are tiny compared to the immense wealth of Spuffy out there, I soon read them all, and, still unsatisfied, resolved that the only thing left to do was to write my own.

So here I am.

I've now written one complete fic, it's called But My Dreams, They Aren't As Empty..., and it's on my journal in its entirety. The story is about 24,000 words, and revolves around a Spara pairing.

Having grown frustrated with the lack of decent Spara out there, I've more recently branched off into reading other pairings. I've sampled pretty much every het pairing out there, my favourites are Spara (still), Sparmony and Spillyria. The main reason for this, I think, is that these are my favourite characters in the show: Spike, Tara, Harmony and Illyria. In the same vein, if anyone ever manages to pull off writing a believable Oz, I'd love to read it.

Based on these new pairings, I've also written two 600/700 word Dead Letter Variations in response to a challenge I found somewhere, one is Sparmony, the other revolves around the title character from Doctor Who.

Got a list as long as my arm of the things I don't like in fanfic, I'll post it sometime, but as a basic outline...

I read fanfic to immerse myself in the Buffyverse, to escape into it, if you will. Not that I don't like it here, but I'm very fond of the characters there, I like reading about their world, particularly when they hook up. With this in mind, I like long stories. Drabbles most of the time piss me off, seems like the shorter you make a story, the more pretentious it gets.

However, I do not read for erotic kicks - I frequently skip sex scenes, and am not at all interested in smut or PWP stories. Not into slash or femslash either - it's gotta have Spike, and a girl, or the two mentioned below.

Weirdly enough, I only recently watched the first four seasons of Angel, I'd seen random bits of Season 2 before when it was on Channel 4 around midnight, but nothing else. And I have found that, not only was it brilliant, and provided some wonderful character insights for my current project, it also led me to my OTP.

When watching Buffy on TV, I was always keen on her and Spike getting together. Looking back now, she was a bitch, and he worshipped the ground she walked on, hardly the perfect romance (though numerous fanfic writers will tell you otherwise, I'm sure there's a message there somewhere). Since I started reading fanfic, as mentioned above, I've gone for Spike/Illyria, Spike/Harmony and Spike/Dawn, but my favourite has remained Spike/Tara. Well, I've finally found my OTP, and to top it all, it's a canonical pairing, and doesn't involve Captain Peroxide, which is quite surprising.

You see, above all, I am a Wes/Lilah fan. Contrast the predictable happily ever after Willow/Tara moments, or the horribly teenage Buffy/Angel 'let's just be friends' nonsense with the full-on dark territory covered by these two. Their scenes together were never less than fascinating, and they remain by far the 'hottest' couple in either series, in terms of the content we saw on screen. Also, I think Lilah's typically nasty bits (about 98% of her screen time - unlike Spike, she really is pretty damn horrible) make her sweet moments all the better. As with any shipping pairing, it revolves around Wes being a legend, and Lilah being pretty much the perfect woman (a position I used to think belonged to Tara, now there's a change unlikely to be a good sign), and the hope that they could have been happy together. Well, not happy, in their case, I don't quite know how to describe it. Bad start for a writer, I know. Working on it.

I am currently working with Monotone on a sixth season for Angel, entitled Still Falling. First episode will be posted in a month or two.
